Enterprise 13354   ‘Dreamweaver’

£950

Bought and restored by me during the winter/spring of 2018.  Unable to sail during the summer due to the drought causing the reservoir to be closed from late June for the rest of the year.  Stored indoors over the winter she eventually made it on to the water 51 years after she was built.  I did research some of the history from The Enterprise Association and discovered the following;

  • Enterprise 13354 was built in May 1968 by D Tyson & Aln Boatyard (I am told that The Aln boatyard was renowned for it’s boat building)
  • The boat was original built for / owned by a member at Tynemouth Sailing Club
  • The last record we have on file for your boat is August 1985 when the boat was sold to a member at St Marys Loch Sailing Club

The reason for the sale is simple.  I am new to sailing and anyone who knows the Enterprise they can be a handful.  I just might be better with something a little more forgiving.  The biggest issue for me after growing into sailing over the past 2 years is the rear main sheet.  I really want a boat with a centre main sheet which I am far more comfortable handling yet I still want a boat that can offer some fun.  I don’t really want to alter the system here that the boat was designed for.

A few points to add;

There are two sets of sails.  The numbered sails are in very good condition.  No damage and despite the last photograph in the sun they are still a lovely colour blue (not faded like some older sails).  The second set are excellent – still crisp and the better set.

There is a spare boom.  The mast was also replaced as the rollers at the head and foot had seized.  You are welcome to the spare mast for parts or repair.

The boat comes with a road trailer and launch trolley (launch trolley slides on to the trailer).  All wheels and tyres are in good condition.

All airbags are in working order.

New jib sheet and main sheet in excellent condition.

Excellent cover – like new.

If there are any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.  Viewing welcome and she is stored near Oldham at Dovestones Sailing Club.

A good club racing boat in excellent condition for its age.

Built in 1977 by Frank Johnson, kept at BCYC for a number of years current owners have had her since the summer of 2012 prior to that she had laid un used in dry storage for a few years. The current set of sails are well used for club racing, there is a spare set of sails which are in a slightly better condition.

Varnish work was stripped back on the main decks and re applied in the spring of 2013, the following spring the hull was repainted.

The boat has been well maintained and is ready to sail / race.

For sale with launching trolley will need road trailer to transport.

2019 Allen, North Sails & Selden Enterprise National Championship at Mounts Bay

Final report by Nick Jackson (See the final overall results)

The last nail biting race of the Allen, North Sails and Selden Enterprise Nationals at Mounts Bay took place on Thursday due to a forecast of 40 mph winds on Friday.  After four days of brisk South Westerlies the wind had dropped to a modest 6-10 knots and swung to the South East – an unusual wind direction according to the locals.  After nine excellent races all the major trophies were still up for grabs and much would depend on the outcome of this final tenth race.

It was between defending champions Dave & Chris Jackman and Paul Hobson / Craig Wheatley. Paul had been runner up many times, and having won the event previously as a crew, he was keen to be the first to also win the event as a helm.  Paul and Craig had a one point lead over the Jackmans with both pairs having the same number of race wins, but overall the Jackmans had a worse discard, meaning that Dave & Chris had to beat Paul & Craig and finish in the top three to retain their title.  No easy task.

There was also only one point between the two leading lady helms Ann Jackson and Jane Scutt for the Iris Holt Bowl so it was all to play for!  In the much-coveted Mary Arnold Baker Trophy (First Lady) the main contenders Becca Stephens and Laura Bevan were close in 6th and 7th places.  It was also a close run thing in the Rolling Pin Trophy (Husband and Wife/Partner) with just one point between Nigel & Andy Bird and Darren Roach with Hayley Ramadhar.

As the race started, former Champion Nick Craig with son Adam (10) showed his class by leading at the first mark.  He retained his lead throughout the race and won by a country mile!  Phil Ford & Jane Humpage bagged an impressive second after a difficult week and Jeremy & Becca Stephens (another former Champion) were third to regain the Mary Arnold Baker Trophy.

Adam Craig guides father Nick to victory in race 10

Meanwhile, Paul and Craig had engaged Dave and Chris in the inevitable pre start match race and, despite being caught up in a gaggle of several other Looe boats, managed to slow them down sufficiently to miss the start by 2-3 lengths.   Although Dave and Chris did manage to wriggle free they could not find enough boat speed in the fickle force 2-3 breeze to get up to the third place they needed so Paul and Craig were crowned worthy Champions.  First time for Paul (at the back end of the boat) and for Craig after many years of trying!   On checking the record, Paul is the only person so far to have won Championship week as both a helm and a crew.  Craig also won the Betty Southworth Trophy for 1st crew over 40 and Paul won the Admiral’s Trophy for 1st helm over 50.

Yet another former Champion Tim Sadler with Chris Keatley managed to fend off a spirited challenge for third place overall from Martin Honnor and Gabe Hill.

The ladies Trophy was going to the wire with Jane leading Ann by several places but Jane succumbed to a 720 at the last leeward mark to drop crucial places and with that the chance of victory.

Darren and Hayley just pipped Nigel and Andy for the Rolling Pin Trophy, but Nigel won the Roy Barker Trophy for 1st helm over 60.  The Stephens, Jeremy and Becca once again won the Generation Trophy. Lloyd Williams from Penzance SC won the Ron Brittain Trophy for 1st crew under 18 and Joe Jackman (crewed by Jack Sargent) from Looe SC won the Yachts & Yachting Trophy for 1st helm under 21. Dave & Chris Jackman, as well as coming 2nd overall, won the Yachtsman Trophy for 1st helm over 40.

The Silver fleet winners were Jeremy Williams & Lloyd Williams from Penzance l and the Bronze fleet winners were Mounts Bay SC members Alex Morcumb SC & Daniel Sel

Back on shore, the excellent volunteer Championship coordination team were busy setting up for the prize giving and disco which would take place that evening in the club house, after the Enterprise Class Association meeting led by Commodore Richard Pryke.  With everyone in positive mood, the class has great plans to increase turnout at next year’s Nationals Championship taking place at Looe Sailing Club.

The prize giving started with spot prizes thanks to event sponsors Allen, North Sails and Selden ensuring that everyone walked away with some goodies.  At the main event, the array of impressive silverware was handed out to riotous applause, a mark of the goodwill and friendly nature of the fleet.  And then it was party time!  In true Enterprise fashion the competitors, family and friends kept the bar staff busy and the clubhouse rocked until the early hours.

Altogether an excellent week at Mounts Bay, greatly enhanced for the first part of the week by having the Ospreys racing alongside us for their four day National Championship. They proved to be very entertaining by inviting us to share their mad “Sheppey Raffle” which raised a couple of hundred pounds for the RNLI.

We’re all already looking forward to our next events which include:

  • Scottish Nationals at St Mary’s Loch SC on 24/25 August
  • Severnside Areas at Penarth YC on 7th September
  • Natiojnal Circuit Open Meeting at Looe on 5/6 October
  • Winter Champs at Northampton SC on 2/3 November
  • And many more regional Open Meetings around the country

And the main events in 2020:

  • Inland Championship at Ogston SC on 25/26 April
  • National Championship at Looe SC from 26 to 31 July. For anyone interested in buying or borrowing an Enterprise for the event, contact the class association via the Facebook page or website.

Passing of John Lufkin

$

This week we were sorry to hear of the passing of John Lufkin.

Condolences to John’s family and friends .

The Lufkin name is synonymous with title winning boats from the fleets most competetive era..

We remember John through contributions from Rodney Gregory, Neil Marsden and this Interview with John from 2008.

Rodney reminds us that John was born 1935 in Salford where he also spent his early years.. A member at Leigh and Lowton from the 70’s, John enjoyed playing Trombone in a swing dance band..

John was a skilled boat builder, turning out championship winning Enterprises and a quality Mirror or two amongst other one designs..

John owned a Solo in which he is only thought to have made the odd sortie to the start line.

Owning Leigh Dinghy Stores from around 1982, John built boats at the premises on Chapel Street before the business was sold in the early 90’s.

Neil Marsden Recalls:

I was lucky enough to work with John as an apprentice boat builder in the 1980’s when we built Enterprise 21333 in which I subsequently won the Inlands, Nationals and Worlds.

John was certainly a world class boat builder and his attention to detail was second to none. He inspired me with his enthusiasm for excellence and his ideas to improve and develop the Enterprise…like making a self-bailing centre board case, causing a stir in the class at the time!

He taught me about professionalism not only in sailing but in boat preparation. I have great memories working with John and owe him a big thank you ,

John enabled me to excel in the Enterprise class and taught me skills that only a true professional could offer. Something that has stayed with me in every class I have sailed since and now as a professional coach I can pass on those skills to young sailors of today.

2020 Championship Update

The impact of COVID 19 on our society remains a concern for us all.

The Association committee this week reviewed the viability of key events over the coming three months including the Master’s and Youth Championships at BCYC 20th/21st June and the National Championships in Looe from July 25th.

Safe distancing remains the cornerstone of all policies and guidance issued to mitigate the spread of the illness. Compliance with these requirements throughout a championship event would not be viable for competitors or those running the event, both on and off the water.

Therefore, the decision has been made to cancel these events.

Alternative dates for the Inland’s, Masters/Youths and other open meetings will be published on our Facebook and web pages where circumstances allow them to be run safely.

We are booked in Brixham from the 14th August for our 2021 Nationals. We return to Looe in 2024 when we will aim to have the first full week of the school holidays in England again.

Those entrants for Looe 2020 who have already paid their entry fee can roll their entry over to Brixham 2021 or receive a refund. Please email info@sailenterprise.co.uk stating your Sail number, Helms name and choice of rollover or refund. Anyone requiring a refund is asked to also state the Bank Account details for the transfer to be made into .

Meanwhile we ask that you sail safely and where you cannot travel get those Blue Sails out on local waters. It is always good to remind our clubs what great boats and people the Ent’s are.

Enterprise dinghy, sail no.  20385 ‘Catspaw’ Built in 1981 by John Lufkin, with a current Class Measurement Certificate.

Advancing age and a broken wrist have finally convinced me to sell my much loved and carefully maintained Enterprise dinghy. I’ve owned the boat for the last 7 years, it has been raced most weekends during the summer at Winsford Flash Sailing Club, and stored under cover every winter.

The boat is absolutely complete and in great condition, with selection of sails, boat covers, combi trailer and is ready to go. Looks very smart with light grey hull and varnished decks, but a couple of years since re-varnished so there is the odd place that could do with touching up for the 2020 season (see photo for example).

It comes complete with a modern galvanised Combi trailer / trolley by Trident

It was  re- painted and varnished throughout (decks and interior) using Epifanes varnish  at the start of the 2018 season, with many fittings renewed or replaced, including:

  • New shrouds and forestay
  • All sheets, control lines and halyards
  • Toe straps
  • Tiller extension
  • Rear Crewsaver buoyancy bags

The boat is fitted for racing, with high quality fittings throughout and control lines led aft.

  • Full specification includes:
  • Proctor mast and boom
  • Laminated centreboard and  rudder with Cee Vee rudder stock and tiller extension
  • Twin bailers and Transom Flaps
  • Set up for centre mainsheet with Harken ratchet block (could easily be converted to rear mainsheet) and Harken jib cleats

Sails include:

  • Decent set of Speed Sails for club racing
  • Spare Speed Sails mainsail (bit tired but OK)
  • Set of Speed Sails with cut down mainsail for strong winds (or light crews)

Includes two covers, both high quality breathable fabric

  • Flat cover for towing or storage, couple of years old, little used and in excellent condition
  • Boom-up cover, about 7 years old, faded but very strong and serviceable

It’s a good looking, sound boat, absolutely complete and ready to race.

Good value at £850 or very Near Offer, available for viewing at my home in Middlewich, Cheshire.

Passing Of Bob Southworth

We have some sad news to pass on.

The face of the Enterprise Association for many, many years, Bob Southworth, passed away last night, at home with Paula, Ian and Marty at his side.

Bob and Paula reluctantly had to return home from Malta at the end of March for the lockdown and then Bob fell ill following a possible stroke at the end of April. He was allowed home for his final few days where he was comfortable and pain free until the end.

We’ve been asked to pass on that Bob’s fondest memories were of Enterprise days and the many holidays at championship events. To all his Ent friends he wanted to say “be happy and raise a glass of Jack Daniels”.

The association sends its deepest condolences to Ian, Jackie, Paula and the family with heartfelt thoughts. Bob will be fondly remembered by all in the association and Enterprise community for his friendship, support and tireless contribution to everything Enterprise.

Rest in Peace Bob.

Birds fly away with Trophies at Allen 2019 Enterprise Inlands

29 ENT’s gathered at Bristol Corinthian for the Allen Inland Championships and leg 2 of the Sailing Chandlery National Circuit.

With gusts of 55mph tearing up the campsite in the morning and storm Hannah dominating the forecast, The PRO released the Enterprise and Redwing sailors for a day of socialising and sightseeing on Saturday. The decision was both correct and welcome as the high winds persisted throughout the day.

Everyone gathered in the clubhouse in the evening to enjoy the championship meal and some impromptu bar games.

Sunday morning started dry and grey with a moderate breeze. By the start of the first race everyone was up on the side with the clearing skies bringing sunshine and a strengthening south westerly breeze.

Competitors at 2019 Allen brothers Inlands

The fleet got away cleanly first time with Callum Dingle & Connor Langham taking the first leg closely followed by Matt & Ivan Jaycock 2nd, Francis Marshall & Daisy Jaycock 3rd, making it a full house for Looe Sailing Club.

A general recall for the Redwings saw them start just as the ENT fleet rounded the leeward mark. Despite some close calls, quality sailing from both fleets avoided any nasty incidents.

Matt and Francis slipped by Callum downwind with Jeremy and Becca Stephens climbing into the top 3 by round 2. The remainder of the top 10 played a game of snakes and ladders while Matt held the lead, until a gain on the left hand side saw Francis through to take race 1 from Matt followed by Jeremy in 3rd, Steve Blackburn and Timber Brownell followed By Nigel and Andy Bird completed the top 5 slots.

The wind continued to freshen for race 2 as the race team turned both fleets around smartly to make the most of the now excellent conditions.

A subtle change in the shifts saw the left side pay on the first beat which was in total contrast to Race 1. The top mark saw Tim Sadler & Chris Keatley rounding first followed by Nigel & Andy then Steve and Timber. By Lap 2 Jeremy & Becca sailed their way into the top 3 behind Tim & Nigel.

As in Race 1 the rest of the fleet continued to shuffle positions on the shifts, with Steve Sargent and Joe Jackman steadily climbing to finish 4th followed by Steve and Timber first dropping and then recovering to 5th.

Tim & Chris lead Nigel & Andy in Race 2 (Picture Courtesy Paul Pritchard BCYC

After a brief shore break and a modest course re-jig the fleets were away again. Tim and Chris again took the lead by the top mark followed by Nigel & Andy.

Jeremy & Becca battled with Steve and Timber for 3rd

The freshening shifty breeze claimed several victims both up and down wind, most notably Tim & Chris took a swim on Lap 2 handing the lead to Nigel with Jeremy securing 2nd and Steve Blackburn 3rd, Martin Honnor and Natalie Roach battled their way up to 4th followed by Francis and Daisy in 5th.

Despite Nigel’s encouragement to call it a day Charles and his race team added a lap for race 4

Nigel & Andy asserted themselves at the front of the race and the event by leading for the entire 4 rounds, despite challenges downwind by Jeremy & Becca, Dave & Chris Jackman came home 3rd with Steve & Timber 4th, Martin & Natalie 5th.

After team Bird were crowned Champions Nigel expressed his and the fleet’s appreciation for an excellent team effort from the BCYC team, both on and off the water. This was a great all round event which reminded us all how competitive and sociable the Enterprise fleet is.

Thank you to Allen brothers who sponsored the Championship.

Nigel & Andy now take the lead after what was the second round in The Sailing Chandlery National Circuit, which moves on to Leigh on Sea for Round 3 on the 18th & 19th of May.

Passing of David Finch

$

0

We are sorry to share the news that David Finch passed away 16/08/20 aged 90

Phil Jackson writes:

I was very fond of David, as I was of Robyn. I probably knew him longer and better than most Sailing Club people. He was our family’s lodger in the 1960s, when we lived in Coppermill Road, when I was a teenager. I remember that he was always out running at the time; he always kept himself very fit. I remember his Mother visiting from Burton on Trent. He was courting Robyn at the time, which was quite amusing. It was not a standard courtship, and it was not a standard marriage, but they made it work very successfully. They were both strong, independent characters, and much of the time neither had a clue what the other one was doing, but they thought the world of each other nonetheless.

David was Mr. Silver Wing Sailing Club. Whoever was the nominal Commodore, David was the real power behind the throne. I served 6 years  as Commodore and 6 years as Vice Commodore alongside him, as well as stints as Sailing Secretary and Fleet Captain. We always got on well, and I believe had great respect for each other, although we are very different personalities. The Club facilities and buildings were always David’s sphere. As a Design Engineer he used to draw up meticulous drawings, even drawing up where every paving stone would be placed. He kept his ideas to himself, and was normally to be found in the corner of the Compound with an angle grinder in his hands, while the rest of us were in the bar. I just let him get on with it; it always seemed to work out very well.

We didn’t always agree. One time when we didn’t was when we extended the Clubhouse. David’s drawings were very elaborate, but not ambitious enough in my opinion, and they didn’t include a bar! My idea was to tack a Pinelog swimming pool enclosure onto the end. I won the debate on that occasion, and the result stands to this day. David was quite upset at first, but I think that eventually he grew to like the new extension, and the bar that Ray Bennett and I built inside it. (Ray did most of the building!). We had to modify the design, however, to make sure that the door aligned symmetrically with the two brick raised flower beds which David had previously built, and which also stand to this day.

David, an ex RAF Pilot, took me on my first flight; in an Auster from White Waltham. He was of course a Development Engineer for B.E.A. / British Airways, specialising in structures. Soon after I joined the Merchantman (Vanguard Freighter) fleet, we had a fleet social come educational evening. David was the guest speaker, and he described in great detail the intricacies of the locking mechanism of the  Merchantman cargo door, which had a nasty habit of refusing to lock properly. It wasn’t the most gripping after dinner speech, but it was very important. The fear was that the door might blow open in flight, which would have been catastrophic. We were all in David’s hands, but it never did come open.

David was a brilliant sailor. When I was a teenager, the Club had four top sailors who won most of the races; David, Ralph Bodily, Ron Carter and Mike Fitzpatrick-Nash. With practice, as I got older, I got to the point when I could give them a race, as could Ray Bennett in his shiny new Avacraft, ‘Razava’. I travelled with David and Robyn, in the little back seat of his MGB, to crew for him in the Enterprise Nationals at Looe. It must have been in 1967 or thereabouts. In those days, the Nationals attracted well over 200 entries. In one race we rounded the windward mark in the lead. I think we came third in that race, and sixteenth overall for the week. Most evenings, David could be found in the boat park, tinkering with or polishing the boat, a Club owned boat number E10175 if I remember correctly. It was the fastest of the Club fleet, and was unofficially reserved for David. I fell into bad company, and they showed me around the many pubs of Looe.

David ruled the Enterprise fleet at Salcombe Regatta for many years in his own Avacraft, which was built by Ron Wadham at Maidenhead to David’s personal design. It was a controversial design, very fast but not quite ‘legal’ in some measurements, so he couldn’t sail it in the Nationals. I remember one year when my younger brother Peter was crewing for David at Salcombe. David decided to sit out one race, and lent the boat to Peter to race. Pete managed to collide with something very hard; a dredger I think, and he brought the boat back with a massive hole in the side. David was not phased at all. He dug out his huge roll of ‘Tank Tape’, (all BA Engineers had plentiful supplies of that excellent material; I think it was used in fuel tanks), and he crafted a beautiful repair with it. That tape repair lasted about five years, before he eventually got round to mending the hole.

David was one of the instigators and leading lights of the inter airline sailing circuit. I went with him and others on many trips, including the inaugural World Airline Sailing Championships in Sydney. We managed to win the WASC in Auckland, Gothenburg, Tokyo and several times at Wraysbury, and came second (I think) in Bergen and Lisbon. David was good fun on those trips. he wasn’t a great drinker and didn’t like beer, but he enjoyed a glass or ten of wine, and became quite funny as the evenings progressed. He was a great and uninhibited dancer at WASC events!

David was indestructible. I remember, when I was Commodore, he was working alone at the Sailing Club, up in the loft, and the folding ladder which he was using collapsed, leaving him on the floor badly hurt. He was there for quite a while before someone found him. I remember visiting him in Wexham Park Hospital. David soon recovered, only to manage to fall of the end of the floating jetty, badly injuring his kneecap. Again, he was soon back to his normal self.

David has a magnificent memorial; virtually every stone and piece of wood at the Sailing Club has his name on it. I will suggest to the current Committee that the Clubhouse is named the David Finch Clubhouse. That will give us the opportunity to have an appropriate naming ceremony, at which we can lift a few glasses and reminisce, sharing our memories of David.
